Summary

Greening cities is a key strategy for adapting to climate change. Trees play a major role in regulating the urban climate, improving quality of life, and preserving biodiversity. They also enjoy broad public support, as evidenced by the many tree-planting projects promoted by municipalities. Taken together, the trees in a city—its urban forest—provide numerous benefits to city dwellers from cooling the urban environment to reducing pollution and stress. Managing urban trees and, more generally, caring for them should be everyone’s responsibility. But due to a lack of shared knowledge, combined with the complex interplay between ecological and social issues makes this task extremely difficult.Trees are living organisms whose needs do not always align with with those of city dwellers, urban planners, or elected officials. This raises a seemingly simple question: Do trees belong in the city? This book brings together different perspectives on this issue through a multidisciplinary scientific lens. The goal is to enable everyone to form an informed and unbiased opinion on this subject by unraveling the complexity of the issues related to the presence of trees in urban environments.
