Tavy, slash-and-burn farming in dense rainforest that is still widely practised by Madagascan farmers, stands accused of causing deforestation. This book, which reports on a historical, agronomic and socioecological study of the phenomenon, sheds new light on the deforestation issue, fires and their management, clearing, and slash-and-burn and how it has changed. It shows that tavy reflects the relations between society and nature, reveals the dynamics of agrarian systems and changes in line with the social constructs and representations of forests.
