Summary

The recurring droughts of recent years have reinforced the need to conserve water for all uses. Agriculture, which accounts for more than 25% of water withdrawals in Europe, is particularly affected. With global warming, plant evapotranspiration is intensifying and soil water balance is deteriorating. Irrigation is therefore becoming a key lever for mitigating these effects, maintaining agricultural production and ensuring food security. However, its use is causing tensions, particularly in southern Europe, making it essential to rethink our approach, incorporating water savings, territorial scales and technological innovations.

To explore these issues, a European symposium, ‘Water Savings in Irrigation’, was held in Montpellier in November 2019. Scientists, entrepreneurs, farmers and managers discussed the future of irrigation in Europe in the face of climate change. Eleven Member States shared their experiences in sustainable irrigation. This issue of the journal Sciences Eaux & Territoires provides a summary, enriched with scientific articles and testimonials from stakeholders in the sector.
