Il est le président-fondateur de l’Association française pour le génie biologique ou génie végétal (AGéBio).
Freddy Rey is Research Director in Engineering Ecology and Ecological Engineering at INRAE's Laboratory of Ecosystems and Societies in Mountain lands (Lessem). He is President of the Ecosystem Management Commission of the French Committee within the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He is the founding President of the French Association for Soil and Water Bioengineering (AGéBio).

<p>Depuis le début des années 2010, le concept de Solutions fondées sur la Nature s’intègre dans les projets d’aménagement du territoire pour concilier les enjeux environnementaux avec les besoins de la société. Mais ce concept soulève encore de nombreuses interrogations. Comment préserver notre environnement tout en soutenant le développement socio-économique ? Comment s’adapter à un contexte climatique changeant, sans renoncer à un certain confort de vie ?</p><p>La préservation ou la restauration de la biodiversité constitue un prérequis à la mise en œuvre de toute initiative, qu’elle concerne la réduction des risques naturels, la sécurité de l’approvisionnement en eau, le développement économique et social, la sécurité alimentaire, la santé humaine, ou l’atténuation et l’adaptation au changement climatique. L’auteur détaille l’application du concept des Solutions fondées sur la Nature pour répondre à ces six grands défis sociétaux, à travers le partage d’initiatives aussi diverses que la restauration de zones humides pour réduire les inondations, la réouverture des milieux pour lutter contre les incendies, l’installation de noues végétalisées pour limiter l’imperméabilisation des sols et ombrager les milieux urbains ou encore la diversification des cultures pour limiter les pesticides tout en préservant leur rentabilité économique.</p><p>Cet ouvrage s’adresse aux décideurs en charge de l’aménagement du territoire. Il intéressera également les entrepreneurs, les chercheurs, les formateurs et les étudiants désireux de mieux comprendre cette approche conciliatrice qui implique une pluralité d’acteurs.</p>
<p>Since the early 2010s, the concept of Nature-based Solutions has been integrated into land development projects to reconcile environmental issues with societal needs. But the concept still raises many questions. How can we preserve our environment while supporting socio-economic development? How can we adapt to climate change without sacrificing a certain level of comfort?</p><p>The preservation or restoration of biodiversity is a prerequisite for the implementation of any initiative, whether it concerns natural risk mitigation, water supply security, economic and social development, food security, human health, or mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The author details the application of the Nature-based Solutions concept to these six major societal challenges, sharing initiatives as diverse as restoring wetlands to reduce flooding, reopening natural lands to control fires, installing vegetated swales to limit soil sealing and urban heat island effect, and diversifying crops to limit pesticides while preserving their economic profitability.</p><p>This book is aimed at decision-makers in charge of land planning. It will also be of interest to companies, researchers, teachers and students wishing better understanding this conciliatory approach involving a plurality of actors. "</p>
